The significance of obtaining correct keys for vehicles being forensically examined simply cannot be over emphasized. This is due partially because, in the case of electronically protected vehicles (VATS, transponders, etc.), having access to proper keys allows us to read possible trouble codes (DTC's) stored within the vehicle's ECM. Having access to keys further allows us to determine the OEM authenticity of the ignition lock cylinder, determine the number of keys programmed into the vehicle's ECM and to determine many other critical elements related to electronic security as well. Secondly, keys should be considered mandatory prior to sending any vehicle for mechanical analysis. Too many times I have witnessed auto technicians attempting to hot-wire ignition systems, attach auxiliary fuel supplies to maintain engine performance, and disassemble entire columns in an attempt to free the steering wheel and gear-shift lever locking systems.
In addition to the above facts, it must also be recognized that after the investigation process has ultimately been completed, the vehicle will eventually be sold. Let me assure you that based on my many years of experience servicing auto auctions, dealers who purchase these vehicles are entirely aware of current key prices. In the case of some Lexus and Toyota vehicles, for example, it can cost in excess of "$1,700 for the dealer to obtain new keys. Let me further assure you that without question, dealers will bid accordingly for the vehicles which do not have keys.
I strongly recommend that if you are unable to obtain the insured's keys prior to vehicle analysis, request us to create them for you during our initial evaluation. Not only will the investigation yield more pertinent information, it will also streamline the mechanical inspection. As a bonus, the selling price of the vehicle will dramatically increase.
